How true is the title of this book? I guarantee all my kids have this attitude occasionally.
Sheri Wall wrote a great realistic book that kids can relate to! Chores can be hard for kids to adjust to doing, but it is good for children to have chores, help around the house and help their family.
Sheri and Ilona did a great job with the words and the illustrations. I enjoy reading rhyming stories, and this book as the perfect amount of rhymes where it is still a story, but fun to read.
Ava, the main character, loves to play, draw, create and watch TV. (Like all children!) Ava is asked by people in her family and her teacher to help with something. She says her grumpy chant:
“Chores make me snore.
They’re a drag and a bore.
What I’d really adore,
is to draw a bit more.”
This phrase is exactly what goes through the mind of children. Children don’t want to stop what they are doing to do a chore or even be helpful. They can connect to Ava which is always a good reading skill!
This book does a wonderful job teaching children that it is hard to stop doing the fun things we are doing, but that it is important to do so.
“It’s such fun to do,
whatever you choose,
but when your mother needs you,
there’s no time to lose!”
I loved that the author added in a friend who asks Ava how to be unselfish. SELFISH is a word not too many kids understand, so this book opens that conversation to understand what it means, but also what it means to be UNselfish!
I thought it was a great addition! Sheri helped us see that a chore isn’t just something we “have to do because my mom told me to,” but instead chores are a way for us to think of others besides ourselves. This is how I used this book with my own children. I wanted my kids to see that when I ask them to help, it is helping their family, but also it is good for themselves. It is giving of ourselves to make something easier or better for others. 💝 That is what makes us happy. Happy children are helpful!
This picture is my favorite one from the book. It shows Ava happy because of all the ways she is able to help her family and teacher. Ava is right, it feels good to help others!
In conclusion this book is a great book to have in your home to help children see the reason of chores and helping out. It helps them see that they will be happy when they are kind and help around the house. The book can be downloaded or a softcover copy purchased.

Being helpful around the house or at school are life lessons that can’t be learned too early! The routines and patterns of chores, much like a rhyming book with repetitive verse, is pleasing to young brains and imbeds learning power. Thank you for featuring my book. I hope it helps your students and followers!
Yes they can learn at any age to be helpful
