A Bad Case of Stripes as a fantastic lesson to be learned for Camilla Cream (and the rest of us)! I like to use it in my classroom because it teaches kids to do be who they are. It is ok to be different and to like different things.

I love how David Shannon uses the unusual liking of lima beans. There are probably a bunch of kids who have not even tried a lima bean. It is a unique food, so this could easily transition the class into trying lima beans. Camilla not only likes lima beans, she loves them. Camilla finds herself with a unique problem. Camille must learn to not care or worry about what others think to get rid of her issue/problem.

I have made a simple list of vocabulary words and made picture cards to use to teach. These are fantastic with younger kids and/or ESL students.

Something I really love to do is reading lessons, so I wrote out lots of reading skills and questions that will make a fantastic reading lesson!

For after reading, I also made simple strips to go over. I ask the students who the main character was, where was the setting of the story, Camilla’s problem and how did she solve her problem.

My math activity to go with the book is trying a lima bean and then decide if they like it or not. I did a graph activity to show how many liked it and how many did not.
