This book unit was the first of several! And it was the starting point of my favorite teacher tradition!

Every Christmas, I pick the dollar book from Scholastics Book Club! However, now the books are $2 each.

For one full week, we focus on this book! We read it 2-3 times adding to our reading skills including different comprehension skills and lessons or discussions! We also do an art project that connects. I take a picture of the student with their craft and glue that picture on the inside cover. This book is their Christmas gift reminding them of all the fun we had with that story.

We do writing activities and any other fun games and activities I could come up with!

I tried to make an ornament that also connected with the books, but some ornaments were just cute keepsakes.

Let’s talk about this book!

Mooseltoe is such a fun rhythmic read. It is a bit longer, but there are so many clarifications and comprehension opportunities in the reading lesson plan.

After reading the book, we make cute moose antlers to wear home. The ornaments and lights take a long time for little kids to cut out, so I had my parents do volunteer hours to help cut them out beforehand.

The kids did cut out their own antlers.

BEFORE CUTTING, I have my students write their names inside the black antler lines. This helps kids not loose/mix up their antlers. Plus it’ll help put the antlers together.

The students decorate their antlers and then I put them together like this. You can add tape but that was only needed if they’re over decorated and it was super heavy.

We added precut stars, but the kids could have cut those out. This project took at least 45 minutes from start to clean up. But they were so cute going home.

This unit has several other activities for the kids to do depending on how much time you want to dedicate.

The mustache activities make for a cute picture and offers a fun but vocabulary learning opportunity.

I so wish I knew how this teacher used my ideas for a bulletin board. So fun to know other teachers are taking my ideas one step greater!
