The title and picture of this book made me intrigued right from the start! The picture clearly doesn’t connect to the title. Or does it??!! I was excited to read this story written by Kristy Hamby who resides in Georgia.

Besides the title intriguing me, what I loved instantly was the simplicity of the illustrations done by Marianella Aguirre! I say simplicity in the illustrations because as a kindergarten teacher, I felt I could show these pictures to my class and try to mimic the style of them with my students. Shared art right there! What a fantastic way to show kids that they can be illustrators too!

Chicken Lips is a story about a cow who was given the name Chicken Lips by the farmer. He was teased about it by other cows and animals. He was deeply sad and confused by his name and he wanted answers.

Chicken Lips the cow!

Some animals laughed when he questioned his name. Other animals gave him positive support for his given name.

Chicken Lips was still sad, but while eating his favorite treat from the farmer, he discovered the reason behind his unique name! There truly was a special reason for the name Chicken Lips!

The reason made me smile not just for the playful cow, but also how it connected to making the farmer smile and be happy! Read this book to see how it all connected together. This was obviously the best part of the story, but really I just can’t help smile because I GET IT! As a mom, I completely CONNECT to the name/idea of Chicken Lips.

As an EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHER (Kindergarten here): This story contains farm animals that students can connect to them! They can list additional animals that could have been added into the book.

I have created a FREE lesson plan to accompany this book! It has reading lessons and some activities! Download from TeachersPayTeachers. Then follow me on TPT!

Vocabulary: So many great phrases to go over with students to help them learn what it means. One example: “hung his head” – As a class, I would show my students how to do it, then have them hang their heads. Then we would talk about the feelings that action would mean.

I would also talk about the way the different animals treated Chicken Lips. How would you describe the animals. Which animal’s response should we be like?

As a class, we could make predictions about why the cow was named Chicken Lips.

You could GRAPH how many students also LOVE POPCORN like Chicken Lips. Maybe even have popcorn as a treat.

This book is a great book to read with my own children at home, but also to read in my classroom. A sub plan could easily be made from this book!

I am always encouraging my students to be authors and illustrators and this book is a great way to help them! My students can be writers like Kristy and write a short story about an animal that is special to them! My students can be illustrators and draw pictures similar to Marianella.

This book can be downloaded onto Kindle from Amazon. Digital Download of Chicken Lips. A book can also be purchased because who doesn’t love HOLDING A BOOK??!! Chicken Lips
